Required Margin Calculations

All required margin calculations will be made in the symbol’s base currency. If necessary, the required margin for the symbol will then be converted to your trading account’s deposit currency at current market rates.

FOREX symbols’ required margin will be calculated according to the formula:

(lots*contract_size / leverage) * (percentage/100) = required margin in symbol’s base currency

Example #1: USD account with 100:1 leverage trading 1.0 lot (i.e. 100,000 units) on USDJPY (with JPY’s 1% margin requirement) will have its required margin calculated as:

(1.0*100,000 / 100) * (100/100) = 1,000 USD required margin
* Non-USD accounts would then convert the base USD currency value to its own account-denominated currency at current cross-currency market prices; I.E. EUR account: 1,000 USD * USDEUR market price of 0.9015 = 901.50 EUR required margin

Example #2: USD account with 400:1 leverage trading 1.0 lot (i.e. 100,000 units) on GBPUSD (with GBP’s 2% margin requirement) will have its required margin calculated as:

(1.0*100,000 / 400) * (200/100) = 500 GBP required margin, converted to USD at current GBPUSD market price of 1.3420 = 671.00 USD required margin

METALS and CFD symbols’ required margin will be calculated according to the formula:

(lots*contract_size*market_price / leverage) * (percentage/100) = required margin in symbol’s base currency

Example #1: USD account with 100:1 leverage trading 1.0 lot (i.e. 100 units) on XAUUSD (with USD’s 1% margin requirement) will have its required margin calculated as:

(1.0*100*1,319.750 / 100) * (100/100) = 1,319.75 USD required margin
* Non-USD accounts would then convert the base USD currency value to its own account-denominated currency at cross-currency market prices

Example #2: USD account with 400:1 leverage trading 1.0 lot (i.e. 10 units) on GER30 (with EUR’s 1% margin requirement) will have its required margin calculated as:

(1.0*10*9,603 / 400) * (100/100) = 240.08 EUR required margin, converted to USD at current EURUSD market price of 1.1095 = 266.37 USD required margin

How Do I Find a Symbol’s Current Margin Currency and Percentage?

All of the information you need to determine a symbol’s required margin amount, including the symbol’s contract size, margin currency, and margin percentage, can be found inside your MT4 trading platform.

To review this information: open MT4’s Market Watch window, select the symbol to review, right-click with your cursor, and then select “Specification” from the context menu.

This opens the symbol’s contract specification window which shows you the symbol’s margin-related values along with lots of other useful information about the symbol including its trading times and swaps values.
